Just a side note, because it's not directly relevant to this conversation, but I love how useful and powerful libuv has become. I'm not a huge fan of JavaScript or Node, but the Node project's work on libuv is a great boon to a large number of projects, for which it is the perfect level of abstraction between raw non-portable OS interfaces and opinionated, performance-sacrificing language APIs.
