Looking back at history, that's a weak argument.

During the age of exploration, the mortality rate of crew on long-distance voyages was 30 to 50%. An example of this is the first circumnavigation of Earth by Magellan, in which 90% of his crew died, including Magellan himself. He lost 4 of his 5 ships.

This egregiously high risk of death did not stop or slow down the wave of colonialism.
