That you survived this as a kid is kind of a miracle. I admire your strength. How as a kid did you escape the brainwashing? Regarding the replies above, they might be referring to how you can say “I love you” even though you don’t really know them. Just a guess. I’m glad you made it out and that you’re now trying to help others.

I read a lot as a form of escapism. Multiple novels a week. So much so that books became the first item to be taken away from me in a punishment.
