Fonts are actually really complicated. To a degree that is hard to understand unless you have had to deal with the intricacies of font files, or rendering text yourself, not using a library that abstracts away all the gritty details.

It doesn't help that TTF and OTF are decades old formats that predate Unicode code points having more than 16 bits, or needing color for emoji glyphs.
