The built-in !DRAW app was surprisingly powerful. It was clunky, but with practice it was possible to do some sophisticated stuff with it.

Yes, and it was implemented in terms of an underlying vector drawing module which could be used by 3rd party apps and even from BBC BASIC fairly easily.
