I wonder how easy it would be to convert, or design something similar to the Enviro+ that is in a waterproof enclosure with battery. Could be useful for collecting data on some basic water quality(turbidity,conductivity,pH,temp) alongside water level.

We currently use In-situ Aqua Trolls[1] to gather these parameters, but a solution like this could almost be considered disposable; hand them out to people in remote areas and you could potentially realise data for rivers/creeks that rarely flow, and would otherwise go unmonitored due to the time and finial investment required.

The trick with waterproofing is that it's easy to do rainproof enclosures, but much harder to make fully submersible things.

For measuring water parameters I would be tempted to use a rugged box for the Pi and then cable (via a removable connector) to something you put in the water. Basically design a probe like the device you linked. The fewer parts that need to be fully waterproof the eaiser life gets.


Absolutely! There have been too many attempts by management to push our technical team towards devices with replaceable batteries as a means of reducing operational expenditure. Such loggers fail, often.


A related story featured on HN a couple of days ago [1]. I'll echo JonnieCache and recommend Jordan Peterson's lectures [2]. If you are concerned about investing the time in an entire lecture, check out the video "Dragons, Divine Parents, Heroes and Adversaries: A complete cosmology of being" [3]; it gives a high level overview of the content contained within his lectures. I believe 'Personality and its Transformations' (2014 series) followed by 'Maps of Meaning' (2015) to be the best approach, though I haven't yet had a chance to listen to the 2016 releases.

Jordan has uncanny ability to piece together observations on human behavior with science and mythology; expounding humanity's nuances, ticks and everyday common behavior through the lens of ancient mythology, evolution and ideas and theories by notable psychologists and philosophers.

Keep an open mind while listening, but also be prepared to think critically about many of his assumptions and assertions as Jordan takes a number of 'educated' leaps (and demands you follow) in regards to published studies and what they may infer, but the leaps are never illogical - just yet to be soundly proven.

Overall, listening to these lectures truly was a transformative experience for myself.

I am a hydrographer in the NT working out in very remote areas- Phone reception is rarely possible for such monitoring sites. Currently we use satellite Comms. to relay water data home, but this is very expensive and prone to failure.

I'm wondering if you, or anyone else, has some ideas on long range communication strategies for large areas (NT is 1.4 million km2).

The area we are required to cover generally means sites are chosen based on accessibility rather than operational importance — it would be great if we could expand the network with low maintenance loggers capable of communicating long distances.


Which operator are you using? We've found L-band to be very reliable and does not suffer from any of the attenuation issues found in Ku. And heavy spreading on the return path provides for an even more resilient link.

Disclosure: We'll be offering an L-band satellite gateway for IoT this summer.


We currently use Iridium. On Ku band I beleive. I'll look further into this and see what our options are for L-band.

Outernet looks like a great project. How small of a satellite can be used to achieve the connection? Any more info/documentation on the L-band gateway?


What update frequency is required?


It's heavily dependent on river/climate conditions. During the dry most loggers will only need to be polled once every hour. However, during the buildup and wet, the stations would ideally be sending back every ~5 minutes.


If it is not too personal, can you elaborate on how you manged to work with your subconscious rather that fight against it? Was it through meditation and/or other simple practices?

Jordan Peterson - in his personality series - talks often about depression, and how tending to the subconscious can result in positive outcomes. Importantly - I think - he suggests that people should stop deceiving the subconscious, and instead listen to it, and work with it. Unfortunately, he fails to mention any meaningful ways to accomplish this.


Personally, I accomplished "working with it" by changing my outlook on life: instead of trying to achieve happiness (which was impossible during a prolonged depression), I tried to achieve putting my socks on. Most of my life during those periods translated into tiny goals like this.

Some days it was not possible to do anything. Eventually I learned that it can be OK to not be able to do anything too (instead of trying to focus on forcing myself to do things, which never worked anyway).

These things come down to hearing "I'm too tired to do all of that" and instead of saying "No, I can do all of this" (deception), saying "Maybe I'll try for something smaller". You repeat that process until you arrive at a point where everything doesn't seem impossible anymore. I think that is what is meant by working with your subconscious.


I think most people don't "get over" depression, so much as learn to live with themselves and the world and their new outlook. It's how I feel about it at least, and it's not hard to recognise it in others.

The process can take many years. There's still joy in the world, but I find I have more conscious awareness of it.

I'd be really interested to see studies of people who "recovered" from depression. Maybe there are two cohorts; those who get their rose-coloured glasses back, and those who have to learn to cope with what they feel. [That sounds worse than I intend it to, but I can't think of a better way to express it].

Indeed. I'd be interested in reading case after case of people that recovered from depression. But for all the industry has put out (drugs, therapy) they do not seem interested in interviewing those people that they say got better in their abstracts. I guess the academia is not interested in that.
