Maybe I'm being naive, but as someone who's spent a lot of time capturing and reading PCAP files, 40GB/s worth of mirror is gonzo nuts! You may already be looking for a needle in a haystack, but this time the haystack is 1/60th of the entire bandwidth of the internet in the year 2000!
I think that's wrong as well, you can't achieve "regulatory self-capture" you need lobbying and insiders, and a government to get there, at least from my primative uninformed view.
Companies in some cases manage to convince governments to let them watch themselves. (This is not always a bad thing. For instance, content ratings have basically been fine, and it's mostly a good thing when they're not controlled by regulation.)
A deadly failure mode here would be for governments to think the AI labs have this under control.
There's the dichotomy of the walled garden, how to minimize scraping/bots/inauthentic amplification etc. Is a town square a town square if you can't hear what's going on from the public lawn on the edge of the square? I feel like HN does a better job, and the ecosystem of external views, LLM/human summary, HN search etc. Is quite exciting! but the scale between the two is one factor and the moderation we accept here also comes with a constraint on topics discussed and restrictions on speech (tradeoffs that I feel are worth it in our context here) So worlds apart and yet adjacent!
