How much effort/legal/heartache is involved in building an after market add-on for commercial vehicles?
Some comforting assumptions
- internal customers. no sales.
- good software talent. can work around anything.
- almost no moving parts - mostly electronics
- can accept cost overrun on the components - each unit is >$10K
- gradual scaling to 1000s units/annum
- daily return to hubs if needed
Not legal advice: If you don’t change steering or brakes then virtually no compliance is required. You are of course liable if your widget causes an accident.
I wouldn't use it for anything important without heavy supervision, as it's very weak outside its specialty. Not ideal for instruction-following tasks.
Good question - but the state of commercial contracts (pre-AI slop) is horrifically dysfunctional, inefficient, poorly thought through and inaccessible to the average person, so the bar is quite low. I think there will be some new malicious behaviours like that to keep an eye out for but I haven't seen them in practice (yet).

Per Artificial Analysis benchmarks, Meta's Muse Glimmer 30b (open weight) holds its own (for agentic code workloads) against models 5x to 10x its size, too.
I found Glimmer underwhelming in terms of coding - I tried it as a drop-in replacement for 3.6, and the output was noticeably worse. 3.8 has been a significant step up so far from early testing.
But i would like to ask.
